Spring has officially kicked off and for watersports enthusiasts, it’s an exciting time of transition. The days are getting longer, the air is warming, and the water is slowly following suit. But with spring comes variable conditions, meaning your gear, preparation, and mindset all need a little adjustment. I spoke to The Official Test Centre (OTC) Team Riders James Hardy and Scott Norman for their tips on making the most of spring on the water.

The Official Test Centre, Team Rider, James Hardy says:

“Spring is always a nice time to be in the water. We generally still get some decent breeze and things begin to warm up. I definitely will have my 3:2 wetsuit in the van ready, but I’ll still be rocking my winter wetsuit as the water is still chilly. I’m optimistic for some sea breezes—fingers crossed for a windy, warm spring!”

James highlights an important point: the air temperature may feel warmer, but the water can still be very cold. For those early spring sessions, a thicker wetsuit is often essential. Don’t underestimate chilly water—it can sap your energy faster than you think, even on sunny days.

The Official Test Centre, Team Rider, Scott Norman adds:

“Now that we’re out the other end of winter, the thinner wetsuits are coming back! The biggest change for me is being able to ride barefoot again—so much better for full control at top speed! Not long until the season starts, so time for some final prep before Leucate for the first event. Let’s hope for wind!”

Scott touches on one of the most exciting spring changes: lighter gear and barefoot riding. Thinner wetsuits and booties allow for better board connection and control, which is particularly important for high-speed maneuvers and jumps. As the water warms, you’ll notice the difference immediately—your balance and responsiveness improve dramatically.

Spring Watersports Tips

  1. Wetsuits & Layers:

    • Keep a winter wetsuit handy for early-season sessions when the water is still cold.

    • Transition to a 3:2 or even 2:2 suit as temperatures rise, but always monitor your comfort—hypothermia can sneak up in chilly conditions.

    • Consider a springsuit or semi-dry for extended sessions.

  2. Footwear & Board Feel:

    • Barefoot riding returns as water warms, improving feel and board control.

    • Lightweight booties are great for colder mornings but swap them out for barefoot sessions when possible to get a direct connection.

  3. Wind Awareness:

    • Spring winds are unpredictable. Keep an eye on forecasts for sea breezes, gusts, and sudden calm periods.

    • Be ready for lighter winds in the morning and stronger afternoon gusts.

  4. Gear Maintenance:

    • Spring is the perfect time to check your boards, sails, foils, and harnesses.

    • Clean your gear after winter storage, inspect for cracks or wear, and service your rig to prevent surprises once the season kicks in.

  5. Gradual Transition:

    • Don’t rush into high-intensity sessions straight away. Build your endurance and reacquaint yourself with the water and conditions.

    • Consider shorter sessions in early spring to allow your body to adjust to the water temperature.

  6. Safety First:

    • Spring conditions can be deceptively challenging. Wear the appropriate flotation, check the tides and currents, and always let someone know your session plan.

Spring Mindset

Spring is a season of renewal for watersports enthusiasts. It’s a time to shake off the winter rust, test new equipment, and build confidence for the busy summer season ahead. Longer daylight hours allow for more flexible sessions, and the gradual warming of the water makes early spring a perfect opportunity to fine-tune technique and have fun without the crowds.

Whether you’re chasing your first jumps of the year, enjoying high-speed foil runs, or simply reconnecting with the water, spring is the perfect time to refresh your kit, reassess your skills, and embrace the changing conditions. With the right preparation, this season can be one of your best yet!
